Bhuyachara Communal Attack

On 19 April 2003 the Bengali settlers of Bhuiyachara under Kamalchari union in Khagrachari district with the direct cooperation of military personnel made communal attack on Jumma villagers of Bhuiyachara Mukh Chakma Para under Khagrachari sadar upazila. Firstly the Bengali settlers looted and set fire on the houses. Nine houses were completely burnt to ashes and 29 houses looted. Twelve Jumma people were wounded in this incident and Mr. Dhira Sen Chakma (55) s/o Indra Mohan Chakma was serious.
Bengali settlers are all inhabitants of adjacent village of Bhuyachara Mukh Chakma Para under Ward no. 6 of Kamalchari union. The Bengali settlers burned down the houses of the following Jumma inhabitants and damages are shown below (as per submitted by Mr. Saiu Prue Marma, Chairman of Kamalchari Union Council on 20 April 2003):

The PCJSS submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on the following points.

To arrest and punish the persons involved in the communal incident after a neutral investigation.

  1. To properly compensate the tribal victims.
  2. To take necessary step to determine land disputes and to amend the land commission law as per CHT Accord.
  3. To rehabilitate the settlers properly out side of CHT.
  4. To implement the CHT Accord immediately.

It is reported that the Bengali settlers have constructed more than 15 houses over the land of Jumma people in the area.
